How Seniors Use Herbs to Improve Health

How Seniors Use Herbs to Improve Health By Karl Edmunds

If you are over 50 years old, you may not be ready to admit you are a "senior" or "baby boomer" but it is very likely you have experienced those strange moments when you forget little things that used to never slip past you. Or you notice that memory loss impacts you with more frequency during the day.

Time, poor diet, lack of essential vitamins, little or no exercise all contribute to the real experience we call aging and the illness and diseases that goes along with it.

What seniors must get clear about is that these health concerns are not absolutely assured for everyone. There are proven ways to slow and in some cases stop several of these negative health processes. The obvious steps are staying fit, getting the right supplements to offset your diet deficiencies and engaging in activities that keep your mind stimulated such as puzzles and games.

Most seniors are striving to minimize the use and costs associated with using prescription drugs as the cure all for many of these aging issues. Start the process by trying to incorporate natural alternatives into your diet.

Some of the nutritional supplements that help to improve mental clarity and body functioning all through your life are:

Vitamin B6: This power vitamin helps manage the synthesis and production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and GABA. It helps improve sleep, moods, appetite and helps reduce stress. Vitamin E: Serving as a powerful antioxidant, Vitamin E protects brain cells and the myelin sheath against the damage caused by free radicals. In your diet, be sure to include nuts like walnuts, eggs, seeds, green vegetables, and whole grains.

There are numerous herbs and plants that may be considered as well. Among the most popular herbs, consider the following:

Garlic: This herb is broadly used as a seasoning and demonstrated its effectiveness in lowering blood pressure naturally in many cases. • Ginseng: This herb is noted to improve mental and/or physical performance while increasing energy levels. • Echinacea: A recognized herbal remedy for colds and other upper respiratory tract infections. • Aloe Vera: Widely known for skin applications such as treatment for sunburn, minor burns, or abrasions. • Licorice: Considered an antiviral and anti-inflammatory treatment for the gastrointestinal tract. • Bacopa: This herb is known for its value in cognitive impairment; • Ginkgo Biloba: Known for it use in memory improvement, Ginkgo is one of the most researched herbs. It is commonly used to improve blood flow to the brain resulting in better focus, mental clarity and endurance.

While numerous cultures around the world have cultivated and used herbs to promote and improve healthy mind and body, each person tends to respond in different ways. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist and inquire about potential negative reactions to medications you may be taking before jumping into an active herb regiment

Herbs and nutritional supplements are just one dimension of a healthy approach to age related issues. Eating right, good exercise, developing hobbies, cultivating strong relationships, drinking plenty of water and minimizing smoking and alcohol are all part of a successful approach to health.

Target Heart Rate During Exercise

Target Heart Rate During Exercise
By Josh K.

Target heart rate for while exercising can be found based upon age. Please keep in mind that these figures may not be the same for all individuals. For instance, certain health conditions may make it wiser not to push the heart rate too high. Additionally, taking some medications for high blood pressure means that the target should also be lowered. Therefore, this information is only to be used for informational purposes, and is considered as a basic guideline for general use, rather than something that would necessarily apply to all readers.

While exercising, an individual can find his heart rate by locating his pulse. This can be found in various spots on the body, where it is felt on the surface as it is transmitted there by an artery. The wrist is a common location for a pulse to be felt at, using the radial artery. The carotid artery in the neck is also a location frequently used to check the person's pulse. These are only a couple of the possible spots that could be used.

This information was provided by the American Heart Association. BPM refers to the number of beats per minute, as calculated during the exercise. For instance, brisk walking may bring it up to levels such as these, however, for many people, lighter exercises may not elevate the heart rate to figures in these ranges. Several of the figures are listed below:

20 years of age 100-170 BPM
30 years of age 95-162 BPM
40 years of age 90-153 BPM

To read target heart rate calculations for other age groups, as well as to find more general information, please continue to TargetHeartRate.org.

How to Have a Desire to Exercise

How to Have a Desire to Exercise
By Amber J. Cabrera

Many of us want a fit and healthy body, but the thought of exercising on a regular basis is unpleasant. Here are a few suggestions on how to have a desire to exercise.

There is a common misconception that a person needs to exercise strenuously and for long periods of time to see any results. This is simply not true. In fact, all you need is about 20 to 30 minutes, three to five times a week, of solid exercise to gain the benefits of health and losing weight. Here's the good news; it can be fun!

Do you enjoy activities like sports, outdoor activities, dancing, martial arts, and swimming? All of these can be your salvation to "disguising" exercise. I call it disguising because these activities lead us to concentrate on the fun part, rather than seeing it as exercise. Focus on the fun of an active hobby, rather than concentrating on the pressures of losing weight.

If you are not as interested in joining or developing yourself within a sport or high impact activity, walking is still the best low impact exercise around that also provides you with positive fat burning results.

In fact, for anyone wanting to lose weight, it is recommended that you exercise in the lower range of your target heart rate. An easy way to gauge this is if you can still talk or hold a brief conversation with minimum difficulty as you're doing it.

Another easy way to monitor if you are in the fat burning zone is to calculate your heart rate. Take your age and subtract it from the number 220. Multiply it by 65%. This is the lower target range at which your body optimally burns fat. Once you have that number take your pulse by counting the number beats you feel in either your neck or your wrist for six seconds. Add a zero to that number. This will tell you the range that your heart is beating. After awhile, you will be able to tell where you are just by how you feel. It's a great method for staying on track.

Once you have that down, you can measure by any activity that you choose to do and as long as you're within that range you will be burning fat. You'll be surprised at how easy it feels when achieving that target heart rate.

If you can associate exercise with fun rather than a painful chore, you are more likely to want to do it consistently.

It is always a good idea to check with your physician before starting any kind of exercise regimen. Good luck!

The longer you wait to get started, the lower your chances of ever achieving the body you want before you die. Find out how to take action and do it today, go to: http://www.usfreeads.com/2253038-cls.html.

Healthy Eating Dos and Don'ts

Healthy Eating Dos and Don'ts

By Thomas R Newman

Healthy eating starts with learning new ways to eat, such as adding more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and cutting back on foods that have a lot of fat, salt, and sugar. A change to healthier eating also includes learning about balance, variety, and moderation. Eating a variety of foods each day will help you get all the nutrients you need. All foods, if eaten in moderation, can be part of healthy eating. Healthy eating will help you get the right balance of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Healthy eating is one of the best things you can do to prevent health problems, such as: Is healthy eating the same as going on a diet?

Everyone can benefit from eating healthy foods, but not everyone has the same nutritional needs. Aim for balance most days; eat from each food group -grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, and meat and other proteins, including beans. Listen to your body Eat when you're hungry. For example, don't reach for an apple every time you choose a fruit. Practice moderation don't have too much or too little of one thing. It will help you feel your best and have plenty of energy. It means making changes you can live with and enjoy for the rest of your life. Diets are temporary because you give up so much when you diet, you may be hungry and think about food all the time. Making a few small changes can help ensure that you're eating a variety of healthy foods. Everyone can benefit from eating healthy foods, but not everyone has the same nutritional needs. How can I stay within my budget while preparing healthy foods? Eating regular meals can help you be more aware of hunger and fullness. Do you rely on packaged convenience foods for a lot of your meals? If so, you may be getting more salt and sugar than what is healthy for you. Healthy eating: Changing your eating habits. To make healthy choices, you need to know how certain foods affect your body. Eat smaller servings, eat them less often, or look for healthy substitutes.

There are usually healthy options at every restaurant, even at fast-food places. The type of restaurant you choose can help you make healthy choices. Ethnic restaurants, such as Indian, Thai, or Japanese, have lots of healthy dishes on the menu. Another healthy choice is to dip bread in small amounts of olive oil instead. It's just a matter of planning ahead, having the right foods on hand, and learning how to cook quick, healthy meals. Try following these tips for making fast, healthy meals and snacks: Healthy eating: Making healthy choices when you shop. Healthy, balanced eating habits provide nutrients to your body. Nutrients give you energy and keep your heart beating, your brain active, and your muscles working. As simple as this sounds, it's not always easy to get the nutrition you need.

What are the Dietary Guidelines for Americans? To eat healthier, you first need to know what makes up a balanced diet. Make sure to track the number of servings you get from each food group. Get at least half of your grain requirements from whole grains. Ask yourself a few questions: Are you getting the minimum number of servings from each food group, on the average? Do you get plenty of fruits and vegetables throughout the day? Are most of the foods you eat low in fat, sugar, and salt? Do you prepare meals at home, or do you eat more fast foods or convenience foods? Do you drink beverages that contain a lot of sugar? Do you drink plenty of water?

2 Quick Workouts For Busy People

2 Quick Workouts For Busy People

By Luis Eduardo

Working out can sometimes be very time consuming. This is the main reason why most people do not make time for exercise. The average person is a working business person, parent, or a student so it is understandable why making time for exercise can be hard. However, if you are able to find just 45 minutes out of you schedule for 3 days a week then you can get a very good quality workout with two simple exercises. When you do super-set workouts and intervals workouts your time at the gym is cut in half and you can be in and out of there in about 45 minutes.

Super Set Strength Training

Super-set strength training will allow you to build muscle fast and get that lean toned body you desire. Building muscle is very important because it will allow you to burn calories even if your body is resting. Muscle will also give your body shape and definition, in other words, it will make your physique look attractive.

In order to get a lean body fast you will need to pair up the super-sets in the right order. The best way to make this exercise effective is to focus on the large muscle groups so that your body will work harder and burn more body fat. It is also important to pair up upper and lower body exercises within a super-set so that you will get a total body workout. For example, by doing dumbbell squats and dumbbell chest presses in one super-set you will target large muscle groups and therefore you will burn more boy fat.

Interval Training for Maximum Fat Loss

One of the best ways to burn off additional body fat and build endurance is to do cardio training. The best cardio to do is interval training because you will burn belly fat to the core. If you are a beginner it is recommended to do intervals on a treadmill so that you will be able to monitor your time and speed. An effective interval workout should always have at least 6 intervals. For example, if you run for 45 seconds then walk for 1.5 minutes this would be considered 1 interval. You need 6 intervals of these to have a good quality fat burning workout. When performing intervals do not forget to include a warm-up and a cool down to prevent muscle injury.

As you can see, intervals and super-sets are a great way to burn belly fat and get a flat stomach. When you combine these two workouts your body will become a fat burning furnace. The best thing about these exercises is that you only need about 45 minutes to complete both of them and only 3 workouts a week are required to get maximum results.
